Forest protection Program

Summary
This project seeks to plant 15,000 Sheanut trees/Vitellaria Paradoxa (locally called EKUNGUR) across Katakwi district by end of 2022. This will improve the health, incomes and nutrition of the local communities. Shea nut butter has varied uses including preventing sun burns, fighting fungal infections, promoting growth of new cells, and helping soothe conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.

Challenge
Massive cutting of indigenous trees for charcoal burning is slowly turning areas of Katakwi district in Eastern Uganda into bare ground. The most endangered tree species are Shea-nut tree/Vitellaria Paradoxa it produces high quality charcoal. Shea butter is anti-inflammatory and helps soothe conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Its an antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial useful in anti-aging and fighting fungal infections. promotes cell regeneration, prevents hair breakage.

Solution
The project will plant 15,000 sheanut trees (Vitellaria Paradoxa) in selected primary, secondary and technical schools, along the roads of major town council and trading centers, and in District and Sub-county Headquarters in Katakwi district. This will be complemented with community sensitization through media. Additionally, teachers of environment and students school environment clubs from the beneficiary schools will be trained on the management and benefit of these trees.
